INESC TEC researcher edits new publication in Mathematical Economics
The scientific publisher Springer Verlag has just released the publication Trends in Mathematical Economics – Dialogues Between Southern Europe and Latin America, edited by Alberto Adrego Pinto, INESC TEC researcher, together with professors Elvio Accinelli Gamba, UALSP (Mexico), Athanasios N. Yannacopoulos, AUEB (Athens, Greece), and Carlos Hervés-Beloso, University of Vigo (Spain).
Doctoral thesis developed at INESC TEC awarded in Brazil
Vinicius Souza of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, University of São Paulo (ICMC-USP), has received the "Best PhD Thesis" award for work conducted at INESC TEC. He was awarded as part of a competition which awards the best theses and dissertations in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science (CTDIAC).

INESC TEC researchers launches CIM Series in Mathematical Sciences in Springer-Verlag
Alberto Adrego Pinto, researcher at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and president of the International Centre for Mathematics (CIM), has launched, together with Irene Fonseca, professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), in the United States, the new CIM Series in Mathematical Sciences, published by Springer-Verlag.

INESC TEC organises international conference on machine learning in Porto
INESC TEC organised, between 7 and 11 September, the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML PKDD 2015), a conference which focuses on the areas of machine learning and data mining. The conference took place at the Alfândega Congress Centre in Porto.
Project e-POLICY rated Excellent in final evaluation
The European project e-POLICY, in which INESC TEC’s Centre for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS) and Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) were involved, was rated Excellent in the project’s final evaluation. According to the reviewers “the project has fully achieved its objectives and technical goals for the period and has even exceeded expectations.”
INESC TEC researchers win Best Paper Award
The INESC TEC researchers Pedro Strecht (Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering - CESE), Carlos Soares (CESE) and João Moreira (Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support – LIAAD) received a Best Paper Award for their paper "Merging Decision Trees: a case study in predicting student performance".
INESC TEC receives award for paper on data mining techniques to predict malfunctions
The paper “Failure Prediction - an Application in the Railway Industry”, written by Pedro Mota Pereira, Rita Ribeiro and João Gama, researchers at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), has received the Carl H. Smith Student Paper Award at the conference Discovery Science 2014.
Project by INESC TEC researcher is finalist in competition for innovative ideas
Project PRAXIS – European Center for Project/Internship Excellence, coordinated by Nuno Escudeiro, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), is one of the finalists of the competition The Next Big Idea: Santander Special Edition for Universities, which awards the best ideas created in Portuguese Higher Education Institutions. The project was one of five ideas selected during the RoadShow at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP) and is one of the best 30 ideas qualified for the semi-finals, which will take place next month.
Projects from LIAAD approved by FCT
LIAAD – INESC Porto LA (Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support) had two of its projects, oRANKI e MORWAQ, approved by FCT. Both projects were coordinated by researcher Luís Torgo.
Researchers from LIAAD publish book
Pavel Brazdil and Carlos Soares, researchers at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), are co-authors of a book recently published by Springer, entitled "Metalearning - Applications to Data Mining", written together with Christophe Giraud-Carrier of the Brigham Young University and Ricardo Vilalta of the University of Houston.
LIAAD/INESC TEC researcher wins Brazilian award
The book Inteligência Artificial: Uma abordagem de aprendizado de máquina (Artificial Intelligence: A machine learning approach), written in co-authorship by João Gama, researcher at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), has won the 2012 Jabuti Award, in the Technology and IT category.
