INESC TEC develops solution for broadband communications for remote areas in the ocean
In October 2015, INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) started working on project BLUECOM+, whose goal is to connect humans and systems in remote locations of the ocean using broadband and low-cost communications. The project, led by INESC TEC and coordinated by the researcher Rui Campos, includes the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA, the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute), and MARLO AS (Norway) as partners.
CISTER researcher is Vice-president of Special Interest Group on Embedded Systems
Eduardo Tovar, director of the Research Centre in Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems (CISTER), an Associate Unit of INESC TEC, has recently been elected vice-president of ACM SIGBED. His term as vice-president of this group of world-renowned experts in embedded systems will last two years, starting on 1 July 2015.
OECD visits INESC TEC
Last 4th of April, INESC TEC had the visit of a delegation from OECD - Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, of which were part the Chief of the Centre for Local Development and the Chief of the Directorate for Public Governance.
INESC TEC article on Machine Learning receives award
The article “Arbitrated Ensemble for Time Series Forecasting”, authored by INESC TEC researchers Vítor Cerqueira and Luís Torgo (LIAAD – Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support) and Fábio Pinto and Carlos Soares (CESE – Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering), received the Best Student Machine Learning paper award, promoted by the Machine Learning journal.
INESC TEC researcher creates systems that increases the popularity of online news
A team composed of researchers from the Universities of Porto and Minho, including a researcher from INESC TEC and student of the MAP-i doctoral programme, Kelwin Fernandes, has created an intelligent system that makes it possible to increase by 15% the popularity of a news piece, and to identify the majority (73%) of news that will be most popular.
INESC TEC develops platform to assess security of the electrical system
The project, which started in January 2012, has a total budget of 19.4M, €13.2M of which funded by the European Union.
INESC TEC in new European Smart Grids project
The kick-off meeting of European project InteGrid took place on 12 and 13 January, in Lisbon. The project is coordinated by EDP Distribuição and has been approved by the European Commission, as part of the European programme Horizon 2020, with a budget of 15 million Euros and a duration of 42 months.

José Carlos Príncipe is professor of the year at University of Florida
José Carlos Príncipe, president of INESC TEC’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and professor at the University of Florida, in the United States, was named the 2014 professor of the year at that American University.
INESC TEC technology allows users to watch 3D concerts and choose most interesting perspective
The “Personalized Multiview Environment”, developed at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) together with FEUP as part of the research line “Media, Arts & Technologies (MAT)”, enables immersive personalised experiences, presenting 3D contents to the users based on their preferences. These preferences are perceived according to the image area that the user focuses on at any instant. This prototype can be used in different areas, such as music, education, health, or tourism.
INESC TEC researcher receives merit award
On 28 May, Duarte Viveiros, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), received a merit award from the University of Madeira following his master’s dissertation titled Sistema sensor em fibra ótica para deteção de gases (optical fibre sensing system to detect gases).
