Portuguese researchers discover substructures in the brain that are relevant for surgical procedures

A team led by Portuguese researchers discovered brain substructures with different connectivity profiles which affect the motor and non-motor aspects of the human body. These findings can help medical teams to improve the targets of their Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) procedures in patients with dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. The results have just been published in one of the most prestigious journals in the field of Neuroscience, Neuroimage.

Viana do Castelo, Portugal, hosts World Robotic Sailing Championship in September

Until 2017, four large smart grid demonstrators will be installed in Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Poland. The goal is to develop and implement monitoring and control solutions, including new equipment and systems, that will promote the users’ participation in the energy marker. Portuguese ports are world pioneers in technological innovation

Portugal has, since September, some of the most technologically innovative ports in the world. The Ports of Leixões and Viana do Castelo, managed by the Port Authorities of Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL), are the pilot of an innovation initiative led by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), together with TRIEDE TTI. The tool 3Port makes it possible to manage the different needs and business processes of port authorities in an integrated fashion, while interacting with the general public, which can see what is happening in the port in real time (http://livemap.apdl.pt).

Portuguese researcher wins award for best PhD dissertation in the world

A Portuguese researcher has won the award for the best PhD dissertation in the world in the area of entrepreneurship. Sérgio Costa, researcher at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), assistant professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), and invited researcher at the University of Gent (Belgium), won the award on 10 August, in Vancouver (Canada), during the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management.

An app that knows the tastes of users is now available

The app is called CAMR (Context-Aware Personalized Multimedia Recommendations for Mobile Users) and it is being developed by INESC TEC (INESC Technology and Science), as part of the research programme MAT – Media Arts and Technology.

Intelligent technology made in Portugal will allow energy savings

Until 2017, all homes will benefit from an intelligent metering technology that will allow significant energy savings. The device will interact, automatically and at a low cost, with the metering systems of the largest electricity, water and gas suppliers, reducing all associated tariffs and bringing benefits to the end-user. The cost of this technology should not exceed 100 euros.

Retail sales can go up by 21% with innovative technology

The future of the retail industry will involve the use of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology, which makes it possible to optimise the retail cycle management. It was based on this technology that the platform ‘CreativeRetail’ was created, and it not only improves customer satisfaction, but also increases sales between 4 and 21% in stores or store chains. The CreativeRetail was developed by Creativesystems, together with INESC TEC.
