The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the largest computer science and education society in the world focuses on providing resources that support the development of computing as an area of knowledge and business.

Promoting computational advances, ACM has created the Special Interest Group on Embedded Systems (SIGBED) to support the emerging area of embedded systems. Currently, embedded systems, considering both software and hardware, constitute over 90% of computational systems. It is estimated that in 2020 between five and ten systems per inhabitant on the planet will be embedded systems.

With this nomination, Portuguese R&D gains greater visibility and influence internationally. Together with important national companies such as Critical Software, ISA, GMV Skysoft, EFACEC, Embraer Portugal, among others, CISTER and INESC TEC have been contributing significantly to the internationalisation of Portuguese R&D innovation in this emerging area.

The director of the research centre linked to INESC TEC and ISEP considers that this nomination is “unquestionably a recognition of the work developed thus far by the entire team of researchers who have helped us grow and earn a place among world leaders in the area of real time and embedded computer systems.”

CISTER focuses on the analysis, design and implementation of real time and embedded computer systems.

CISTER and INESC TEC have been growing internationally, and CISTER is currently one of the main research groups in Europe in this area, participating in various industry-academy projects and consortiums, such as CONCERTO, EMC2, P-SOCRATES, ENERGAWARE and MANTIS. International partners include different world-renowned companies, such as Airbus, Ericsson, Ford, Fiat, Honeywell, Infinion, Schneider, Siemens, Thales, or Volvo.
