Portuguese startups raise 60 million dollars’ worth of funding in the USA
José Manuel Mendonça, Chairman of INESC TEC and Scientific Director of the UTEN Portugal Program, travelled to the University of Texas at Austin, USA, with a group of startup companies as part of the Global Startup Program. The goal is to support Portuguese startups through partnerships and American capital. Some of the projects have already signed contracts and obtained funding worth a total of 60 million dollars.
Project SUSTAINABLE comes to an end
Project SuSTAINABLE (Smart distribution system operation for maximizing the integration of renewable generation), which began in January 2013, has come to an end. The goal with this project was to develop advanced algorithms and features to support the operation of the distribution network in order to maximise the integration of renewable energies in a safe and sustainable way. The closing event took place on 30 and 31 March in Lisbon and Évora, respectively.
INESC TEC wins two Digital Inclusion and Literacy Awards
Two projects led by INESC TEC researchers received the “Digital Inclusion and Literacy Award”, sponsored by the Portuguese funding agency Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). The award ceremony was held on 13 September at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
The Vice-President of the European Commission visits INESC TEC
Within the scope of the second edition of the “Energy Union Tour” initiative, promoted by the European Commission (EC), EC’s Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič visited INESC TEC on the 17th of July.
Huawei roadshow chooses INESC TEC to make a stop in Portugal
INESC TEC received, on the 23rd of June, the ICT Roadshow of Huawei, an exhibition of two trucks with IP and IT technology in which visitors could get a user experience in Real-time, On-demand, All-online, DIY and Social Connectivity.
Lecture with Alan Arger at INESC TEC
North-American researcher Alan Arger came to INESC TEC on the 26th May to give a lecture entitled “Production frontiers and economic tradeoffs for ecological restoration of fire adapted forests in the western US”.
Contract with EDP promotes renewable energy in the Azores
INESC TEC has recently signed a contract with EDA - Electricidade do Açores (electricity provider in the Azores islands) for the provision of specialised technical consultancy services. As part of this contract, INESC TEC will be conducting different studies to find solutions for building pure reversible hydroelectric power plants on the islands of São Miguel and Terceira.
INESC TEC researcher leads scientific committee of conference in the US
Leonel Morgado, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), is co-chair of the scientific committee of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN 2016), to be held between 27 June and 1 July at the University of California (Santa Barbara campus).
Project iBrow helps to modernise INESC TEC lab
On 23 and 24 January, INESC TEC welcomed the consortium of H2020 project iBrow, which features universities, institutes and companies from several European countries, such as United Kingdom, France, Germany and Portugal.
INESC TEC was granted its first patent in Japan
After the United States, Japan approved the patent request concerning the technology “Sound Processing Device, Sound Processing Method, and Sound Processing Program”, granted with the number JP2014052630.
Project RELECT of INESC TEC gathers data to study environmental radioactivity
Within the scope of the work developed by INESC TEC in the field of environmental radioactivity, with an emphasis on geoscientific applications like monitoring radon gas, the RELECT (Radioactivity and Electric field monitoring campaign at Hyytiälä) campaign took place in the SMEAR II station, in Finland, between the 12th and 16 th of June, with funding by project ENVRIplus.
INESC TEC researchers output highlighted in Japan
Pedro Costa, CMU-Portugal, and Aurélio Campilho, coordinator of the INESC TEC’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER), presented a scientific paper at the International Conference on Image Analysis Applications (IAPR MVA 2017), and it was highlighted with some special references.
INESC TEC and S. João Hospital Centre sign collaboration protocol
On 29 December, INESC TEC signed a protocol with the S. João Hospital Centre (CHSJ) to promote cooperation in various areas: information systems (sustaining artificial intelligence and other techniques to support Business Intelligence), energy efficiency, logistics, and biomedical engineering.
INESC TEC researchers develop Bragg network using innovative methods
Now that 20 years have passed since Francisco Araújo, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), developed the first Bragg network in April 1994 (see Figure 1), the CAP researchers Paulo Marques (coordinator) and Daniel Alexandre fabricated the first Bragg network using a femtosecond laser (impulses lasting 200x10-15s, that is, one millionth of one billionth of a second), purchased recently as part of the BEST CASE (Figure 2) project.
INESC TEC wins FCT’s Digital Inclusion and Literacy Award
Ramiro Gonçalves, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) and associate professor in IT at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, has won the Digital Inclusion and Literacy Award, promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), with the project “Barometer for Web accessibility in Portugal”.

In 2015, INESC will be celebrating 30 years of existence in Porto – three decades of knowledge production and technology transfer.
New doctorates at CTM
Soraia Ferreira, Abayomi Otebolaku and Fardin Derogarian Miyandoab, researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), are the most recent doctorates at CTM.
Paper on dynamically reconfigurable digital systems wins Best Paper Award
The paper titled “Dynamically Reconfigurable LTE-compliant OFDM Modulator for Downlink Transmission”, written as part of project CReATION, received a Best Paper Award at the XXXI Design of Circuits and Integrated Systems Conference (DCIS 2016).
INESC TEC researcher publishes another book
Ricardo Queirós, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), has published a book titled Gamification-Based E-Learning Strategies for Computer Programming Education.
INESC TEC demonstrates medical technology in the United States
On 18 February, the manager of the recently created Centre for Research in Biomedical Engineering (C-BER) at INESC TEC, Aurélio Campilho, presented the RetinaCAD in a workshop that took place in California, in the United States. The RetinaCAD is a computer assisted medical diagnosis tool based on the analysis of images of the retina.
