Project by ISEP and INESC TEC receives European support
The European Defence Agency (EDA) is now supporting Turtle, a project developed by ISEP and INESC TEC. 60% of the funding comes from European structural funds.
The Turtle, a project developed by a Consortium composed of the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP, higher institute of engineering in Porto) and INESC TEC, has recently received support from the European Space Agency (EDA).
The goal with this project is to develop new energy efficiency technology that may be incorporated in robotic vehicles for maritime and military operations.
«This project will allow the consortium to develop materials in order to create equipment for deep sea operations, and to increase the tele- presence of humans in a water environment, through remote equipment», explained researcher Eduardo Silva.
This is the first EDA project to be given the green light and it will receive funding worth 770 thousand Euros (60% of the project’s total budget) from European social funds.
This way, the Turtle will support deep sea research and help consolidate the country’s expertise in this area: «From an indirect point of view, the Turtle will allow an easier access to the bottom of the ocean and will consolidate the sovereignty of the Portuguese state in this sector», he mentioned.
Since the Turtle is a project «that is small and has a short duration», it should be concluded in 2015.
Other than ISEP and INESC TEC, other partners include the Centre for Naval Research (CINAV), PLY and Silva Matos Metalomecânica S.A.
