At the forefront of aquatic robotics
Portugal is one of the world powers in aquatic robotics, according to Matos, researcher in underwater robotics at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering of Porto and professor at the University of Porto.
However, he warns that the country should invest more and continuously “in order to maintain this leading position.” This and two other specialised research centres in Portugal have contributed tremendously to the evolution of these vehicles. The country’s connection to the sea, combined with its exclusive economic zone and broader continental shelf, have managed to take Portuguese technology to the bottom of the ocean, a place where machines resist better than humans. Aníbal Matos spoke about this at the “Soltar Amarras” conferences, which took place at Casino Figueira, in partnership with the Port Authority of Figueira da Foz and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. J.A.
