The main focus of the Biomedical Imaging Lab is the development of advanced image processing and analysis methodologies, particularly medical and biological images, with the aim of creating computer-aided diagnosis tools to support medical decision making. The research activities at the Lab use several imaging modalities addressing different clinical problems, namely: analysis of eye fundus images for early detection of prevalent eye pathologies, measurement of macro vascular markers in ultrasound images, early detection and characterisation of lung pathologies, and content-based image retrieval using lung CT image data.

Retina CAD

Design of advanced methodologies for early detection of retinal pathologies, based on the automatic calculation of specific markers. These markers are obtained in different eye image modalities (retinography, angiography, Optical Coherence Tomography – OCT).

Carotid CAD

Carotid CAD

The Carotid CAD project aims at measuring macro vascular markers of atherosclerosis, such as the intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque burden from carotid US images. The relation of these markers to the presence of cerebral vessel diseases will be studied.

Lung CAD

With the Lung CAD project we aim to create a computer-aided diagnosis system useful in the early detection of lung lesions, such as subtle lung nodules, or non-solid nodules such as ground glass opacities.

CBIR

CBIR

Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is a search technology that could aid medical diagnosis by retrieving and presenting earlier reported cases that are related to the one being diagnosed. The diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases is one of the problems addressed.
