INESC P&D Brasil and INESC TEC develop system to monitor railways
INESC P&D Brasil and INESC TEC are working with the Federal University of Juiz de Fora and INERGE – Energy Management Institute in Brazil on a project where the goal is to create an embedded system for visual monitoring and thermal railways. The project started in February.
The system will be installed on cargo trains, and should be able to automatically perform inspections on rails, fasteners, frames, crosspieces, poles, tunnels and other nearby objects in the network.
In this project, entitled "Embedded System Inspection Visual and Thermal Processing with Digital Identification and Images", INESC P&D Brasil and INESC TEC will be in charge of developing a stereoscopic system capable of generating highly accurate 3D information. This system will consist of two high-resolution cameras, a Pitch and Roll image stabilisation system and an embedded system for calculating the disparity map.
INESC TEC will be represented by its Centre for Robotics in Industry and Intelligent Systems (CRIIS), led by António Paulo Moreira, coordinator of CRIIS, while INESC P&D Brasil will be represented by Marcelo Petry, a former researcher at INESC TEC.
The project
is funded by the MRS Logística, a company covering 1643 km of railway lines, with
nearly a third of all cargo transported by railway in Brazil.
The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with UP-FEUP.
