The described invention forms a load cell based on optical fibre embedded in composite materials. The load cell can be constructed by two different optical fibre sensing head configurations.

In the first one, it relays on a multimode fibre microbend sensing head and is interrogated by an intensity
fibre optic sensor. In the second configuration the sensing head is based on a Bragg grating written on a monomode optical fibre and is interrogated by a spectroscopic fibre optic sensor.

Both sensing heads are embedded in composites formed by layers of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). Each set is cured inside an AUTOCLAVE.

This process gives more stiffness to the load cells and determines the operation measurement range. The load cells can be used for measuring pressure, vibration and impact.
