The present invention refers to a flared single-transverse-mode fibre amplifier. In this system, on entering the amplifier, a single-transverse-mode optical signal is effectively amplified and acquires a typically single-mode geometry; its section increases so that on exiting it has a highly multi-mode geometry while maintaining a radiation spread with a single-transverse-mode.

The amplified signal presents great stability and tolerance to curves induced by the amplifier. This new amplifier configuration is compatible with single-mode optical sources and can be used for power control staggering.
