The present invention refers to a novel configuration for measuring bending in advanced materials (e.g. composite materials). It is based on the intrinsic sensitivity to curvature of fibre Bragg gratings, written in D-type Hi-Bi fibres.
The suggested configuration consists of a pair of D-type FBG sensors that exhibit differential sensitivity to bend and common-mode rejection to temperature and/or axial strain. It can also be used to simultaneously measure curvature, temperature and axial strain.
