INESC TEC’s researcher wins silver medal in ACM Student Research Competition

Rui Pereira

The paper, entitled “Locating energy hotspots in source code” and initially submitted as a long abstract paper, was presented as a poster during a second evaluation phase in the 39th International Conference on Software Engineering, one of the most important conferences in the field of Software Engineering. The paper was developed within the scope of the GSL - Green Software Laboratory national project, funded by the FCT.

During this evaluation phase, Rui Pereira and nine other candidates made a short exposition and public presentation of a poster, during a special session at the same conference, before a jury composed of five members from ICSE and ACM. In this round, only four researchers were selected to go through to the next round.

Now in the third round, comprised of a research talk at ICSE, Rui Pereira took second place in the competition, losing first place to a researcher from the Carnegie Mellon University and previous researcher at Apple. In this last round, three research works received awards.

The next round will be at the Grand Final of the ACM Research Competition, where all medallists will participate. This round will take place during the Banquet of ACM Awards, where the Turing Award is usually presented, i.e., an award assigned by ACM to someone who has significantly contributed to the field of Computing.

It is important to mention that this competition, sponsored by Microsoft, provides a unique forum where students can present their work, as long as it is original, before an acknowledged panel of judges participating in the conferences.

This ICSE edition took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from the 20th to the 28th May, and it has about 1600 annual participants.

The researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with INESC TEC.
