HASLab/INESC TEC project receives Google Research Award

A research project developed by INESC TEC’s High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) has received a Google Research Award on 3 July. The project, entitled "Minha”, aims at simplifying and improving the development of software for cloud computing.

“Cloud computing” means providing storage and computational capacity as a service to a community of end-users. This allows users to store data and use them anytime and at any place. This is a concept that is used by the large computing systems on the web, such as Google or YouTube.

The "Minha" platform makes it possible to simulate multiple virtual Java machines running in middleware and distributed applications in a single virtual host machine. This machine reproduces the correctness and performance features of large scale distributed systems. As a result, it is possible to perform large experiments, make global observations without interferences and perform automatic tests, even in incomplete systems.

The Google Research Awards are awarded by the famous creator of the search engine based on a selection of the best research ideas in areas of mutual interest with Google. In the 2012 round, Google selected 104 proposals – mostly from the United States – across 21 different focus areas for a total of nearly 6 million dollars.
