Portal Douro (news article)

Tourism portal for the Douro region

The Douro Valley is a portal that was technically coordinated and designed by INESC TEC. Its goal was to promote tourism in the Douro region, in Portugal. The portal offers a wide range of points of interest, and geo-referenced itineraries, as well as overviews of the main attractions of the area (landscape, heritage, vineyards and wine, accommodation and food).

The portal also provides a geographic application called geoDouro, which allows the users to navigate to points of interest and routes displayed on the map, define their location to calculate distances to other points in a straight line, and even build their own journey, making a map consisting of points of interest and selected itineraries. After identifying the unit where they want to stay, users can book their stay directly through the portal, in collaboration with a partner reference.

The Douro Valley also has another area, inDouro, which includes news articles, events and featured points of interest, which are updated frequently. In particular, events are georeferenced as points of interest and itineraries and integrated in the geoDouro in an innovative way, allowing users to search for the most relevant topics, in any geographic area and at any period in time.

The INESC TEC team involved in this project included elements from the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) and the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM). Leonel Rodrigues and André Dias were responsible for the technical development, and António Coelho, José Manuel Oliveira and Lino Oliveira were the coordinators.

The portal Douro Valley was developed in partnership with CITMAD (Innovation Center of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro), the University of Porto (Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Economics, University of Porto) and UTAD (University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro).
