Portuguese project to provide internet 100 km from the coast (Telecompaper)
Portugal's Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) is developing a wireless internet system that will be accessible more than 100 kilometers from the coast, reports Sapo. The Bluecom+ project is being implemented in partnership with the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Air (IPMA) and the Norwegian logistics company Marlo AS.
In practice, the Portuguese researchers want to create a network of helium balloons that can be fixed in buoys along the sea, in boats or wind farms. These points will act as replicators of Wi-Fi or 4G signals, using for this purpose the long reach spectrum range that was previously occupied by analogue TV.
The Bluecom+ project will be in development by the end of this year,
but already in the summer the entities will conduct a test of the
concept in the marine environment. For it will be used two IPMA vessels
that will serve as anchor points to balloons.
