Portugal tests ocean broadband coverage near Azores (Telecompaper)
A team of researchers from Portugal's Institute of Engineering Systems and Computers, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) successfully concluded broadband tests in the ocean near the Azores islands, reports Sapo 24.
The Bluecom+ project aims to enable internet access in remote areas of the ocean, more than 100 km from the coast, using low-cost broadband based on Wi-Fi and 4G technologies.
Partners in the project include the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) and Norwegian company Marlo. The concept is based on the use of helium balloons anchored, for example, on buoys, boats or wind farms, allowing the forming of a broadband meshed flying network operating in frequency bands released by analogue TV. It is expected that the entire Azores archipelago will have comprehensive broadband coverage within five years under the plans.
