INESC TEC researchers awarded by REN
João Silva and Rui Pinto, researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) have won first and second places of the REN’15 Awards for best master’s degrees in energy.

João Silva won 1st place with the thesis Definition of maintenance policies in power systems. The 2nd place was awarded to Rui Pinto’s dissertation, titled Wind Power Forecasting Uncertainty and Unit Commitment. Developed as part of the Master’s Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and concluded in the school year of 2013/2014, both theses were supervised by Vladimiro Miranda, Member of the Board of INESC TEC and professor at FEUP.
“I am very proud to receive this award. It is always nice when our work is acknowledged, especially by an important company like REN”, states Rui Pinto. “Initiatives like this are commendable, as they encourage young researchers to conduct quality work, and to go even further”, the researcher adds.
João Silva reveals that this “award not only acknowledges the work I have developed over the last five years, but is also a great motivation to continue the research I have been conducting over the past year.”
João Silva and Rui Pinto emphasize that this is an award for both FEUP and INESC TEC. “The quality of the work is a reflection of our dedication, but it was also made possible by the supervision and patience of professor Vladimiro Mirando, who, with his out of the box way of thinking, made it possible for us to plan a very interesting project in the area power systems maintenance. We would also like to thank researchers Jean Sumaili and Leonel Carvalho for their contribution to our work”, the researchers concluded.
The REN Award is the
oldest scientific award attributed in Portugal. This initiative has been
awarding, since 1995, the best MSc theses in the area of Energy conducted in
Portuguese higher education institutions in the different fields of
Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Information Systems
and Computing. The award ceremony will take place in October.
