Paper by INESC TEC researchers is mandatory reading at MIT

João Claro, researcher at the Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE) and member of the Board of INESC TEC, and Abílio Pacheco, also researcher at CITE, are co-authors of the paper “Forest fire management to avoid unintended consequences: A case study of Portugal using system Dynamics”, which is, since 2013, mandatory reading in the subject “Introduction to System Dynamics”, at Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

As part of this subject, taught by John Sterman, one of the most important experts in Systems Dynamics, students analyse and discuss this paper, with Portugal as case study.

The paper was a result of project FIRE-ENGINE, funded by the FCT as part of the MIT Portugal Program. Concluded in May 2015, the goal with this project was to provide guidelines and tools to improve the performance of the forest fire management system. These results cover, in a cohesive and integrated way, the prevention, fight, and forest management, providing a pioneer tool to minimise the risk of fire.

The paper is also authored by Ross Collins and Richard de Newville, of the Engineering Systems Division at MIT, and Tiago Oliveira, coordinator of the  Defesa da Floresta Contra Incêndios (Defence against forest fires) division at Portucel Soporcel group.
