Pydi Ganga concludes PhD

Pydi Ganga, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia, has concluded, on 19 December, her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

Her thesis, titled Transparent and/or flexible low-cost electronics with a-GIZO TFTs, proposes a platform to develop integrated circuits with a-GIZO TFT technology.

Advised by CTM researcher, Vítor Grade Tavares, and co-advised by Pedro Guedes de Oliveira (senior consultant to the Board of INESC TEC) and Pedro Barquinha (Faculty of Science and Technology, Nova University of Lisbon), the researcher focused on designing and fabricating integrated circuits  in low temperature fabrication processes, using amorphous oxides in the semiconductor material — a-GIZO. Because they present a very high level of transparency under visible light, it is possible to create fully transparent systems (invisible), which can be used in applications such as intelligent windows. The systems can also monitor biological signals in a non-intrusive way – e-skin, as the electronics can be deposited in flexible materials at low temperatures.

According to the researcher Vítor Grade Tavares, “Pydi Ganga’s work is really interesting because it brings all those fascinating concepts of transparent and flexible electronics to the real world.”

In 2014, Pydi Ganga won third place in the competition “Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2014”, in the PhD category.
