SUMMARY:UTM Lab Meeting\: An Adaptive Cross-Layer Adaptation Framework for Media delivery over Heterogeneous Networks

DESCRIPTION:Streaming applications in distributed systems are facing d
ifferent problems\nat different layers of the Open Systems Interconnec
 tion (OSI) stack.\nRequirements regarding bandwidth\, delay\, jitter\,
video and terminal\ncharacteristics (temporal and space scalability)
and user's preferences come\ntogether to influence the architecture of
multimedia delivery services with\nparticular quality-of-services (Qo
S). However the Internet architecture is\nonly capable to support best
-effort services\, with varying network\nconditions during multimedia
delivery. Currently\, a multitude of protection\nand adaptation strate
gies exist at different OSI layers\, however these\nstrategies are ind
ependent of each other. To improve the perceived media\nquality delive
red to end users over heterogeneous networks\, QoS strategies\nshould
combine mechanisms at different layers\, including application layer\,
\ntransport layer and data link layer. In this paper\, we formalize th
e problem\nof multimedia streaming application over heterogeneous netw
 orks\, then\ndiscuss the challenges and finally\npresent a putative ar
 chitecture.
