The effect of shielding on dose distributions in intra-operative electron radiotherapy: a Monte Carlo simulation study

Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) is a therapy performed during surgery that makes it possible to apply therapeutic levels of radiation to a target area, be it tissue or tumours, without affecting adjacent sensitive tissue.

In this project, led by the Research Centre of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology Francisco Gentil in Porto, EPE, a team of researchers from INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) is responsible for developing a numerical simulation of the radiation source, a linear electron accelerator.

The simulations are performed for different beam parameters in IORT, and the goal is to assess the effect of shielding on dose distributions in intra-operative electron radiotherapy.

The project is a result of the constant search of doctors-physicists for more effective radiotherapy treatments and for high quality control procedures.
